What I Do

My name is Tony Matejek. I'm a designer, maker, gardener, home brewer and many other things. I currently reside in Austin, Texas. I was a graphic designer, then a ux/interaction designer, then a visual designer and now I'm a Senior Product Designer.

My first job out of school was in branding and print design and my job after that was designing environmental graphics. After those jobs I organically moved into experience design and digital product creation. I've seen and done a bit of it all, and made my way into the career I love. I look forward to making life better for people through design while meeting business goals for the companies I work with.

My design philosophy is that the best interface is no interface. Design should get out of the way and maximize the users effectiveness so they can have more time to do what's needful.

How I Do it

How I Do it

46f29260-7f6a-4fca-ab1d-a4028aa0fa64

“If I had an hour to solve a problem I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions.”

My design methodologies revolve around user-centered design practices, and my background in interaction and visual design put me in a unique position. I tell stories using the language of design. I understand the importance of a precise, cohesive, and visually branded product, and how this impacts the overall experience. I have a clear understanding of design research, mental models, and how usability is just as important as a visual language. It's of the utmost importance that business needs are met, as well as those of the users, and I help stakeholders find that balance between the two. I build empathy for my users, and every decision I make is made with their experience and well-being in mind.

I take the insights gained from research, workshops, and conversations with stakeholders and users, and turn those into creative solutions. I solve problems, I create meaningful experiences, I make users effective.

I'm a designer through and through, and truly believe empathetic and thoughtful design can improve the lives of all people in meaningful ways.

I tell stories through the language of design. I understand the importance of a precise, cohesive and branded visual product, but also how this impacts the overall experience. PRINCIPLES

How I Reflect

These are guiding principles I reflect on when designing to ensure that as a team, we build the right thing in a thoughtful way.

I've been brewing beer for about 5 years now. Its an artform in its own right and extremely rewarding. Beer on tap anyone? I always say, If you can make a cup of tea, you can brew beer.

Clarity
Communicate with a clear voice. Understand user needs, the market, technology and the business goals. See the experience as a whole, not just the digital touchpoint. Provide information only when needed by the most effective channel.
Purpose
Design solutions that are useful. Understanding why the service is needed. Measuring and challenging the effectiveness of what we design. Helping users achieve their goals as quickly as they can by getting out of the way.
Inclusivity
No user left behind. Communicate clearly and simply so that everyone can use the services. Designing for people irrespective of their background or circumstance. Each user has their own needs and deserves our consideration and thoughtfulness.
Cooperation
Openness to working with others.  Cleary communicating with others as we are making design solutions. Share knowledge as well as being open to learning from others. Not being afraid to experiment and not being afraid to fail.
Iteration
Learn often, learn fast.  Observe what people do with our products and not what they say the do. Make design decisions based on data and evidence. Continually revisit and maintain design solutions by responding to change.
Honesty
Present a clear and truthful message.  Be truthful about what we can and cannot do for our users. Design products parallel to our brand values. Be ethical in every aspect of the design process and avoid dark patterns. Consider users well being and the impact technology and our products have on them.

HOBBIES

When I'm not Doing it...

When I'm not Doing it...

I have many hobbies that keep me busy when I'm not designing.
These are just a few of them.

Homebrew

I've been brewing beer for most of my adult life. Its an artform in its own right and extremely rewarding. Beer on tap anyone? I always say, If you can make a cup of tea, you can brew some beer.

Resin Art

Another creative outlet of mine is making art out of epoxy resin. I make clocks, trays and coasters. There is nothign like functional art to start a conversation. I sell them on my Etsy store. It's sticky work but totally worth it!

My wife and I love everything horror. We can't get enough scary Movies, haunted houses and ghost stories. We even got married during halloween and everyone was dressed in costume. The scarrier the better.

Arcade Aficionado

From a young age I've been an avid gamer. I'm sure I will play video games for the rest of my life. I even built a full size arcade machine to play classic arcade games. There is nothing like getting immersed in a good game.
